Fine Art Prints From Royal Cornwall Museum

A. L. Rowse in Lostwithiel, Cornwall. November 1985

Born at Tregonissey near St Austell, Alfred Leslie Rowse was well known as an expert on Elizabethan England and his poetry about Cornwall is highly regarded. He was also a Shakespearean scholar and biographer. Despite his parents being poor and semi-illiterate he won a place at St Austell Grammar School (Poltair School) and then a scholarship to Christ Church, Oxford. He is pictured with Gwen Powell-Jones, Lostwithiel Mayor, and Canon H Miles Brown, local historian. The group are holding some of the towns regalia. Photographer: Jonathan Barker
