Christ Mocked, Annie Walke (1877-1965)
Oil on canvas, Newlyn School, 1928. Annie Walke studied at Chelsea School of Art and under Augustus John at the London School of Art. She moved to Cornwall with her husband, Bernard Walke, when he became curate in Polruan. In 1912, they moved to St Hilary where they became friendly with many of the Newlyn artists such as the Procters and Munnings and, through them, the Lamorna group. Annie Walke was a wonderful painter of faces and expressions. In her religious paintings, often firmly rooted in the Cornish countryside, the faces of her subjects feel alive and contemporary to the time they were painted
