Moche Culture Portrait Vessel, Truxillo, Peru
Moche culture vessels are some of the few realistic portrayals of human faces found in the Pre-Columbian Americas. They were mass-produced, using moulds, and then altered to give each vessel a unique appearance, possibly to represent real people. This vessel is thought to be the head of a priest, wearing a headdress and earrings. These vessels are distinctive because of their stirrup spouts. They were used for both everyday and ritual use. This one dates from 700-800AD and was found in a tomb in the coastal region of Tuxillo. Gift of Mr. G.D. Hornblower
