Gorsedh Kernow Bardic ceremony, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. September 1989
The Bardic procession makes its way onto the King George VI playing field in Lostwithiel, for the first Gorsedh Kernow, or Cornish Gorsedh, to be held in the town since its inauguration in 1928. More than 160 Bards formed the great circle as the Mayor Dennis Hutchings welcomed the Gorsedh Kernow, to Lostwithiel, speaking the first few words in Cornish An hathui lowen my Lostwithyel a thinerck thewch pop all which roughly translates as This happy day Lostwithiel welcomes you all'. 24 Lostwithiel Brownies, bare-footed and in tunics of green, performed the flower dance. Gorsedh Kernow exists to maintain and give expression to the national spirit of Cornwall as a Celtic country. Photographer: Jonathan Barker
