St Mawes Castle from the estuary with a yacht, Cornwall. Around 1925

St Mawes Castle was built by Henry VIII in 1542 and held by Sir Richard Vivian in the English Civil War. Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled 'Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots', given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his 'ordinary camera' are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect

The 'Obby 'Oss, Fentonluna Lane, Padstow, Cornwall. 1900s

The 'Obby 'Oss proceeding up Fentonluna Lane towards Prideaux Place. The 'Obby 'Oss is an integral part of the May Day celebrations in Padstow. Each year, on the 1st May, the town is decorated in greenery and the 'Oss (horse) parades the streets, followed by a 'teaser' who holds a padded bat. The procession is accompanied by accordions, drums and singing. The fearsome 'Oss wears a large mask and swirling skirts under which he tries to catch young maids. Photographer: Unknown
