Skopelos Sky shipwreck at Port Isaac, Cornwall. 15th December 1979

The wreck of the Greek Skopelos Sky cargo vessel which ran aground at Hell's Mouth, Port Isaac in December 1979 during hurricane force winds. Rescue of the ship's crew by Padstow Lifeboat proved impossible and all men aboard were rescued by helicopter. Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) records state: Silver Second-Service Clasp awarded to Coxswain Trevor England in recognition of his courage

A view from the west side of the harbour showing the timber narrow gauge railway gantry. Trucks full of china clay wait to be loaded into the sailing vessels via the wooden chutes that can be seen in the raised position above the vessel on the left of the picture. The narrow gauge railway ran from St Austell to Pentewan harbour with China clay for shipment. The nearer vessel is the barquentine Imogene originally built as the Strathendrick'. Visit to Fowey by Prime Minister, Cornwall. June 1990

Visiting Fowey in June 1990, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher met some of the RNLI crew and went for a trip around Fowey harbour in the lifeboat. She watched a mock rescue, from the lifeboat to the RNAS Culdrose helicopter, from the shore at Albert Quay. The lifeboat used was Faithful Forrester, on loan to Fowey from Dover. After decommissioning in 1997 she was sold to Australia. Photographer: Jonathan Barker
