Dolcoath Mine, Camborne, Cornwall. 1893
Two miners operating the Balance box at the 236 fathom level in the Man Engine shaft. The box, filled with stones, was fixed by a connecting rod to the main rod and counter-balanced the enormous weight of the main rod. This eased the work of the steam engine in raising the rod. The Man Engine shaft was inclined and the balance box had to be similarly tilted over hence the rather curious angle of the picture. Photographer: John Charles Burrow
