The shaft being sunk below the 406 to the 420 fathoms level. The flexible hose carried compressed air to a Holmans rock drill seen fixed to a stretcher bar. The photographer, John Charles Burrow (1852-1914), described this as a difficult photograph to take because the camera had to be fixed at an angle of 45 degrees. The temperature was 100 degrees F and the humid air made photography difficult
