The third Royal Party descends the inclined shaft, Botallack Mine, St Just in Penwith, Cornwall. 24th July 1865

The Prince and Princess of Wales, later to become King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, were in the first skip to descend the inclined Boscawen Shaft. Pictured here are the Duke of St Albans, the Earl of Mount Edgecumbe, Captain de Grey and Edward St Aubyn. In this photograph, the despatching party, seen in TRURI : 2011.11.7, have stepped back into the housing. The brakesman, Captain John Rowe has taken his position in the rear of the skip. The Crowns pumping engine house is on the right. Photographer: Robert H. Preston
