The Prince and Princess of Wales, later to become King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, are pictured in the first skip to descend the inclined Boscawen Shaft down to the 235 fathom level. The Princess of Wales and Mr John St Aubyn of St Michaels Mount are seated at the front with Lady Elizabeth St Aubyn behind. The Vivians or Sutherlands are seated in the next row with the Prince of Wales behind them. Seated at the rear of the skip is brakesman Captain John Rowe.
