1914-15 Star Medal, First World War 1914-1918

This medal was awarded to Captain F. Call. It is one of 17 campaign medals awarded to members of the Call family, now in the museum collection. The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). The Call family served with the Royal Irish Regiment, which until 1881 was known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. It was also known as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot and the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot. The regiment was disbanded in 1922. The 1914-15 Star was a campaign medal of the British Empire awarded to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who served in any theatre of the First World War against the Central European Powers during 1914 and 1915. The medal was never awarded singly; recipients were also awarded the British War medal and the Victory medal. The medal is a bronze four pointed star, surmounted by a crown. The obverse has two crossed swords with the blades upwards and a wreath of oak leaves, with GV (King George V) at the bottom. An overlaying central scroll bears the inscription 1914-15. The reverse is inscribed with the recipients rank, name and regiment. The ribbon features vertical stripes of red, white and blue with the colours blended. TRURI : 1931.40.55
