India General Service Medal, Second Anglo-Burmese War / Second Burma War 1852-1853

This medal was awarded to Colonel George Frederick Stevenson Call. It is one of 17 campaign medals awarded to members of the Call family, now in the museum collection. The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). The Call family served with the Royal Irish Regiment, which until 1881 was known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. It was also known as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot and the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot. The regiment was disbanded in 1922. The medal was a campaign medal approved in 1854 for issue to officers and men of the British and Indian armies. The medal was issued with the clasp PEGU (a province of Burma) for service between 1852 and 1853. Three wars were fought between the Burmese and British forces resulting in the gradual extinction of Burmese sovereignty and independence. Designed by L.C. Wyon, the obverse of the circular silver medal bears the head of Queen Victoria with the inscription VICTORIA REGINA. The reverse depicts the figure of Victory crowning an armed warrior with a laurel wreath. The rim is inscribed with the recipients name and regiment together with the designers name. The ribbon features vertical stripes of red and dark blue. TRURI : 1931.40.48
