Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880, Second Anglo-Afghan War 1878-1880
This medal was awarded to Captain G.F. Call who served with the Royal Engineers. It is one of 17 campaign medals awarded to members of the Call family, now in the museum collection. The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). Also known as the Roberts Star or Kandahar Bronze Star, the medal was awarded to British and Indian troops who participated in the 320 mile march from Kabul to Kandahar in Afghanistan between 9th-31st August 1880, under the command of General Frederick Roberts. The Battle of Kandahar, fought on 1st September 1880, was the last conflict in the war. The medal is a bronze five pointed star, surmounted by a crown and inscribed with the monogram VR and KABUL TO KANDAHAR 1880. The reverse is inscribed with the recipients rank, name and regiment. The ribbon, now faded, is rainbow coloured. TRURI : 1931.40.52
