Dolcoath Mine, Camborne, Cornwall. 1893

Single Decker gig, designed to carry 6 men, on the skip road at the 302 fathom level in Eastern Shaft (at the other end of the mine from the man engine). To save the weary climb up ladders in mines without the use of the gig, miners sometimes rode up in skips meant only for carrying ore. Such skip-riding was dangerous and expressly forbidden and was a common cause of accidents. Photographer: John Charles Burrow
