Eleven people stand on the steps. The Jacobs Ladder steps were built by Jacob Hamblen, a builder, tallow-chandler and property owner, to connect his property at the top of Summer Hill with his businesses at the bottom on the Moor. He erected the ladder in the 1790s, in 1840 the ladder was replaced with 111 granite steps. Photographer: Arthur Philp
