Beating the Bounds, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. May 2000
About to set off to Beat the Bounds of Lostwithiel, this group has met at the bottom of Fore Street near the Duchy Palace. The walk will take them to all the boundary stones of the borough, about 17 miles, where the man with the stick, John Pegg, will tap (beat) each participant. The last stone this group had to pass was on the river bank near Newham, south of the town, where they had to wade across the river to return to the town. In 1685, or thereabouts, granite stones were placed at prominent places on thoroughfares and crossing points at the periphery of the Lostwithiel Borough Boundary. Photographer: Jonathan Barker
