Preaching Pit, St Newlyn East, Cornwall. Around 1930
Crowd at the Preaching Pit, with tea laid out. Women and children can be seen in summer dress. The preaching pit. originally an old stone quarry on the edge of the village, was opened in 1852. Following the East Wheal Rose mining disaster of 1846, it was converted into a preaching pit as a memorial to those who died. Preaching pits were open-air arenas for Methodist preachers. There are many across Cornwall. Photographer: Unknown
